Microfluidics and BioMEMS Laboratory is in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The lab is a part of Interdisciplinary Microsystems Group (IMG), which is a college-wide, multi-departmental, education and research program of the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering in the University of Florida.

The laboratory is directed by Professor Z. Hugh Fan. Our research focuses on (1) fabrication technologies, including semiconductor fabrication processes (e.g., photolithography), thermoplastic manufacturing processes (e.g., molding), and non-traditional methods (e.g., printing); (2) microflows, including fluid behavior in small scale (e.g., simulation), flow control components (e.g., microvalves), and platform integration; and (3) microfluidics applications, including particle/cell separataion, low-cost and rapid diagnostics, and high-throughput synthesis or detection. Microfluidics is promising to reach the holy grail of “lab-on-a-chip”. In analogy to shrinking a computer from the size of a room in the 1950s to a laptop today, instruments for chemical and biological analyses could be miniaturized using modern microfabrication technology. Potential applications of the portable, miniaturized devices include point-of-care testing (e.g., in emergency rooms), environmental monitoring, and detection of pathogens or biowarfare agents in the field.
