Recent Research Awards

The following is a selection of recent externally funded research projects involving MAE faculty members, including the funding agency and the approximate award amount and duration, as well as key participants from MAE.

  • Predictive Science Academic Alliance Program (PSAAP II) award from the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).  The five-year $8M award funds the Center for Compressible Multiphase Turbulence, which will focus on turbulence and mixing in particulate-laden flows under conditions of extreme pressure and temperature.
  • Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) — Eglin AFB.  Mathematical Modeling and Optimization Institute.  This $4.5M award has associated research tasks focused on developing GNC capabilities on air and ground vehicles to include accurate estimation and control of vehicles, autonomous guidance, cooperative navigation/guidance, and high quality simulations of test bed vehicles, sensors, processors, and algorithms.  In collaboration with the UF Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering. 
  • Department of Energy (DOE) SunShot Program.  The two-year $1M award focuses on the development of a transformational high temperature thermochemical energy storage (TCES) system based on strontium carbonate (SrCO3).
  •  National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Five-year $900K award under the Mentored Quantitative Research Career Development Award program. 
  • US Army - Aberdeen Proving Ground.  Three-year $900K award for evaluation of advanced ceramic materials for dynamic applications. 
  • US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) - Young Investigator Award.  Three-year $360K award toward a unified dynamic information guided particle framework for mission design and execution. 
  • Department of Energy (DOE) ARPA-E.  The three-year $3M award focuses on the development and evaluation of a reactor capable of using concentrated solar thermal energy to drive the formation of syngas (CO and H2) from CO2 and H2O over a novel, metal-oxide based reactor.
  • US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).  Three-year $650K award on expanding the design space of flexible flapping wings. 
  • Department of Energy (DOE).  Five-year $750K career award to explore the prediction of thermal transport properties of materials. 
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).  Three-year $560K award focused on diagnostic techniques to elucidate aerodynamic performance.
  • US Department of Defense (DoD) DARPA.  Four-year $1M award to develop a computational framework for rapid, reliable and robust solutions to complex constrained optimal control problems.
  • National Science Foundation (NSF).  Three-year $400K award to explore resource allocation for airliner safety: A design perspective.
  • National Institutes of Health (NIH).  Four-year $500K award to explore microfluidics-enabled immunoassay array for multianalyte detection.
  • Department of Energy - Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP).  Three-year $800K award for development of innovative accident tolerant high thermal conductivity fuel pellets. 
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Johnson Space Center.  Four-year $800K award to explore design, fabrication and post-impact characterization of laboratory-based satellite to explore orbital debris.
  • US Army Research Office (ARO).  Four-year $640K award to explore photoresponsive polymers for autonomous structural materials.
  • Valspar, Inc.  Six-year $475K award to perform fundamental research on surface science and wear.
  • US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).  Three-year $1.1M award on the design and redesign of engineering systems. 
  • US Department of Defense (DoD) Geospatial Intelligence Agency.  Six-year $750K award to explore nonlinear observer and learning methods for geolocation.
  • US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).  Three-year $700K award on the three-dimensional control of high speed cavity flows. 
  • US Department of the Army.  Five-year $890K award on high strain rate testing of armor plates and helmet pads. 
  • Alcon Laboratories.  Four-year $1.2M award to study tribological, mechanical and materials properties of hydrogels.
  • AFOSR in collaboration with California Institute of Technology:  Two-year $520K award to explore wall turbulence with designer properties: Identification, characterization and manipulation of dominant energy pathways.
  • National Science Foundation (NSF).  Five-year $400k CAREER award to explore an integrated hybrid forecasting framework for increased wind power penetration.

  • US Office of Naval Research (ONR).  Three-year $480K award for study of biomechanics and sensory mechanisms of cephalopod propulsion.
  • US Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).  Three-year $500K award to study multiscale modeling of multiphase turbulence.
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Marshall Space Flight Center.  Three-year $430K award to determine heat transfer coefficients form two-phase chill down.
  • US Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR).  Three-year $740K award on dynamic data-driven UAV networks for plume characterization.
