Welcome prospective undergraduate and graduate students to the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at the University of Florida. MAE is the largest — by student enrollment — academic program on the University of Florida campus. Now more than a decade beyond the successful merger of the mechanical and aerospace programs, MAE remains a vibrant and intellectually diverse department at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
Our focus within MAE is on excellence in engineering education, which extends from our incoming freshmen to our PhD graduate students and post-doctoral researchers. At the undergraduate level, MAE has made a commitment to teaching both theory and practice, which is reflected in our classroom lectures and our five state-of-the-art laboratories. A first class education in mechanical and aerospace engineering requires a strong foundation of core knowledge coupled with hands-on opportunities to design, build and test, along with the soft skills of leadership, communication and teamwork. We accomplish this vision through our wide range of courses, labs, undergraduate research, student societies, design and build project teams, and our community service projects.
This comprehensive philosophy carries to MAE’s graduate program, where the intellectual diversity of more than 50 faculty members allows our MS and PhD students to explore multidisciplinary problems at the intersection of science and engineering, pursuing their interests in experimental, theoretical and computational aspects. MAE’s leading-edge research provides the opportunity for our graduate students to grow and prosper, becoming tomorrow’s thought leaders in industry, government and academia.
Students are the lifeblood of any university. As you consider your future educational plans, we thank you for exploring MAE at the University of Florida and hope these pages will serve as a valuable resource to assist in your decision process.
