Lecture Quizzes

As stated in the syllabus, weekly quizzes will be given in lecture.  The purpose of the quizzes is twofold.  First, the quizzes measure attendance.  Second, and more importantly, the quizzes review the most important course material to measure your understanding and highlight weaknesses on which you need to focus.  We will always review the quizzes in class, so use that opportunity to ask questions.  It is important to make notes of any quiz questions you had trouble with so you can review the material before the next quiz and the final exam.  The quizzes are always cumulative.

The weekly quizzes will be posted here so you know the types of questions you should be able to answer from the weekly assignments and readings.  Over half of the questions on the final exam will come from these quizzes, so make sure you understand how to solve the problems (i.e. make sure you're not just blindly memorizing answers).  I try to post the quizzes a few hours after they are given in each lecture.  Consequently, some of the following links will be "broken" until the appropriate period in the semester.

Important final notes about lecture quizzes.

The quizzes are open note/laptop to make them easier for the students.  What is not acceptable, however (and will be regarded as a violation of the academic honesty policy) is using copies of quizzes from previous semesters while taking the quizzes for this course.  If I (or lab TAs) see this during a quiz, the papers will be confiscated and you will be issued a failing course grade pending the student misconduct hearing.  Do not ever bring to class materials other than those provided by me (and available to every student) for the current semester.  This includes having the material on your laptop and closing your screen when I walk by during the quizzes.  If I see this activity, the assumption will be that you are cheating and I will send you to the Honor Court.

Some weeks I will not have time to review the quizzes in lecture because of the amount of new material I need to cover.  Those weeks I will ask you to take the quiz home, complete it and submit it at the beginning of your formally schedule laboratory period.  Copying a friend's quiz or printing one off the course website is absolutely a violation of the honestly policy and will result in a misconduct hearing and failing course grade.

On occasion, I will circulate attendance sign-in sheets to catch the students who show up for a quiz and leave shortly thereafter because they have better things to do than listen to the material that is relevant for that week's lab.  Those students will receive a zero on the quiz towards their attendance.  More importantly, however, any student caught signing the roster for a friend in their absence will also be sent to the Honor Court for an academic honesty violation and will receive a failing course grade.  Attendance is a requirement of this course due to all the group projects.  If you can't come to class, either wait and take the course when you can, or change majors to one more suitable for your attention span.

Think about what your integrity is worth before jeopardizing it.
