Integrated Thermal Protection System

Space vehicles experience severe aerodynamic heating upon reentry into the Earths atmosphere.  Thermal protection systems are currently added onto these vehicles to protect against aerodynamic heating.

An integrated thermal protection system (ITPS) combines protection against this heating and provides load-bearing capabilities as part of the structure.  The corrugated core sandwich panel shown is one candidate design we are studying.

For the ITPS optimization problem, we seek to minimize the weight of the ITPS while minimizing the probability of failure.  Constraints are based on temperature, stress, buckling, and deflection.

Deflection of the ITPS

The development of physical and algebraic surrogates is an integral part of the analysis and design of the ITPS.  Uncertainty quantification, risk allocation with probabilistic optimization, and thermo-structural analyses are a few topics associated with the ITPS.
