The University of Florida chapter of the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is an extensive organization whose pillars are based on supporting and connecting students to professional, academic, and mentorship opportunities.
Beyond these pillars, SHPE means a home away from home – a Familia, as its members label it. Students of all backgrounds are welcome – you don’t have to be Hispanic, and you don’t have to be an engineer.
For many students, SHPE is the launchpad for their future. Isabella Eby, a student dual-majoring in Mechanical and Aerospace engineering, explained that SHPE changed the trajectory of her career.
“It’s tough to make a breakthrough in the space industry without connections,” she detailed. “With SHPE, I was able to put my foot in the door by getting involved with networking events and the Mentor SHPE program.”
The club is a great way to expand your horizons. Like many members of SHPE, Isabella encourages students – both incoming and returning – to engage in the wide range of professional and social activities the organization offers.
One of SHPE’s cornerstone events is Goals for Tomorrow (GFT), a fundraising event dedicated to raising three major scholarships in a friendly competition. Attendees play games to earn points for their team and spend the day getting to know their peers. This event holds importance for many students in SHPE, because they can give back to future generations of Hispanic engineers.
Grace Ramirez, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student and the event director for the 2024 GFT, credited her best memories with SHPE to the event. “Goals for Tomorrow is the best way to impact the community and get involved,” she recounted. “Because of the event, I feel like I can approach anyone within SHPE and find a friend.”
Another major event that the club participates in is the SHPE National Convention. This annual gathering brings together SHPE affiliates from across the nation, connecting them to corporate opportunities, STEM competitions, and educational workshops.
“It’s a great opportunity to network and find friends beyond UF,” explained Juan Miguel Valderrama, Nuclear Engineering student and SHPE President. “My best memories are from national conventions, because I grew close to my fellow members.”
Whether you’re a student, professional, or just someone looking to make a difference, there’s room for you. Sebastian Sobrino-Gonzalez, third year Mechanical Engineering student and SHPE VP of External Affairs, emphasizes that SHPE fosters an inclusive and welcoming environment. As he put it, “It is beyond rewarding to see the growth of our members. They often join without knowing much about our organization; over time, they find meaningful ways to contribute and eventually take on leadership roles, giving back to the community.”
