Warming Hearts and Toes: MAE Socktober

This October, the UF MAE community came together to make a difference in Gainesville through Socktober, a sock drive benefiting St. Francis House, a shelter for women, families and children experiencing homelessness. The effort raised 155 pairs of socks, enough to bring comfort and warmth to many in need.

“One of the most requested items at shelters is socks. Homeless individuals can be on their feet all day, and if damp or cold, it can be incredibly hazardous.” – Linda Curwick, administrative assistant in the department.

The idea for Socktober started with Curwick, who wanted to connect MAE with the community in a meaningful way. Inspired by Daily Dose of Kindness emails and daily scripture, she envisioned an initiative that could both give back and engage the department. After presenting the idea to the EPIC committee, UF MAE’s group dedicated to Engagement, Participation, Innovation and Community, plans quickly took shape.

Bringing Socktober to life was a true team effort. Andrew Zuehl, administrative assistant to the department chair and EPIC committee member, constructed a giant cardboard sock to collect donations, while the EPIC committee organized, promoted and coordinated the drive. The team posted signs, encouraged participation and worked together to collect 155 pairs of socks for St. Francis House.

For Curwick, the most memorable part of the day was witnessing the reactions of the recipients. “Seeing the genuine appreciation for something so simple, a pair of socks, was incredibly moving”, she said. This initiative would not have been possible without the collaborative efforts of the EPIC committee, and everyone in the department who contributed.

The MAE Epic Committee is comprised of: Brittney Guerrier, Eleanore McGuire, Helen Chisolm, Hitomi Greenslet, James Fairbanks, Linda Curwick, Melanie Deprospero, Stephanie Wells, and Andrew Zuehl.
