Thermal Transport, Thermodynamics and Power

Thermal transport and thermodynamics are among the pillars of the modern civilization that have enabled many technologies the world currently enjoys such as thermal power plants, heating/cooling systems, and engines. This field of science is critical for energy efficiency, environmental sustainability, materials science, and industrial processes.

Research and educational efforts of the TTES group is focused on modeling and experimental studies on energy efficiency and decarbonization, cooling/heating systems, micro- and nanoscale thermal transport in semiconductors for data centers and electric vehicles and grid power electronics, thermal storage, renewable heat, cryogenics and environmental control solutions for space, absorption-based separation for moisture and CO2 capture, aerothermal phenomena in energetic systems, computational thermal environmental science, combustion science, and thermodynamics of intra/inter-molecular interactions for novel energy and therapeutic applications.

Originally from Korea, Sunjae moved to West Lafayette, IN in 2020 for his doctoral study at Purdue. Following his graduate work, he started as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of Florida in January 2026.
